12/13/09 - A Sort - of Harpie Luncheon Click to add your comment That headline is really not true, but I pretend it was! On Saturday a good friend dropped by and asked me if I was "spontaneous". I replied in the affirmative. Having proclaimed that I was indeed a spontaneous person, when Barbara informed me that mutual friend, Judie, had been invited to be Barbara's guest at her churches Ladies' Christmas Luncheon but was fighting a cold, and would not be able to attend. Would I like to take her place? I told Barbara old spontaneous me was willing, and I'd be ready when she came by to pick me up. I thought she said 10 minutes. She said an hour. (My hearing is really going down hill!) Anyway, I was ready when Barbara, with two other Sunbeam residents (Shirley and Dee) came to pick me up. The event was held at the Calvary Chapel El Centro church - a most impressive structure and grounds. We found our table but since we were early, Barbara gave us a grand tour of the facility. I must say we were all impressed. The classrooms for the children were particularly impressive. They were bright, colorful and definitely inviting. It is clear that the ministry reach out to the young people. We viewed the large chapel, the outside and all the classrooms that were no being used for the Tea. Barbara was rightfully proud of her parish and parishioners. We returned to our seats and were impressed and delighted with the decorations on our table and on all the other tables. ![]() Women of the parish volunteered to host and decorate a table. Our table was picture perfect and we were made to feel welcome by everyone we met. The program began with a welcome from the pastor's wife, followed by prayer and a particular and personal Christmas Story by one of the ladies. The Christmas Tea itself was beyond description! Delicious finger foods of every type and description were for the taking. There were two chocolate fountains for fresh strawberries, bananas and fresh pineapple. Everything was done to perfection and the parishioner with whom we shared the table had her two young daughters along. What lovely and mannerly girls they were! After the repast we were entertained by music from several other parishioners - we even had a little sing-along! The program ended with an inspirational talk from a church member who lives and works in Mexicali. Most of the parishioners brought soft stuffed animals and toys for this lady to take to one of the orphanages in Mexicali. It was a lovely afternoon, and although it was not a "Harpie Luncheon" - the festive nature of the afternoon reminded me of my own dear friends up in the Bay Area who have been celebrating the holidays with our own, unique Luncheon for many years. Perhaps next year we'll get to the Bay Area for another Harpie Luncheon. In the meantime, I appreciate Barbara's invitation and only regretted that Judie was unable to attend. Here's the four of us - ![]() | |

| "NO DEAL BASICALLY means that if we can't find a solution that wold benefit us both, we agree to disagree agreeably--No Deal. No expectations have been created, no performance contracts established. I don't hire you or we don't take on a particular assignment together because it's obvious that our values or our goals are going in opposite directions. It is so much better to realize this up front instead of downstream when expectations have been created and both parties have been disillusioned. When you have No Deal as an option in your mind, you feel liberated because you have no need to manipulate people, to push your own agenda, to drive for what you want. You can be open. You can really try to understand the deeper issues underlying the positions." (9/9) |
